The course aims at giving an overview of the various forms of preservation and promotion of film heritage, with a specific focus on curatoship and programming.
We will begin the course with a historical overview of the rise of practices aimed at preserving and promoting films and and the so-called "non-film" documents, to then focus on the different fields, themes, and figures of which film culture is made up:
- archives, museums, temporary exhibitions;
- film festivals and retrospectives;
- movie theatres, digital platforms, alternative screening spaces;
- archivists, programmers, curators, directors and artists;
- film restoration and preservation.
