
This MOOC introduces Low-Code/No-Code (LCNC) software development. Low-code is a relatively new approach that enables developers of all skill levels to design applications quickly with minimal manual coding. No-code is a method designed to help those who cannot code but wish to develop an application for a specific purpose. LCNC development platforms allow powerful software applications to be implemented rapidly without requiring in-depth knowledge of the underlying platform or computing in general. These platforms and tools accelerate the production and deployment of applications, providing significant economic benefits and greater efficiency for organisations, individuals, and research communities. They also allow anyone interested in developing applications to do so independently.
The course is organised around 5 core modules that guide learners through the background and rationale behind LCNC, right up to the basics of developing workflows for applications. The course is intended to be accessible to anyone (despite their academic background) and so it focuses more on the concepts and mindset behind LCNC rather than a deep dive on the technical aspects of the paradigm. The course is broken down as follows:
Module 1 – Introduction to LCNC
Module 2 – The Components (SIBs)
Module 3 – The Process (Workflows)
Module 4 – The Domain Organisation (Taxonomies)
Module 5 – Strategies for Building Workflows
Each module contains two to three video lectures along with quizzes that can be used to assess your understanding and interactive exercises. Links to relevant research are provided in the lecture slides if you wish to read more on a particular topic or case study.
By the end of this MOOC, learners will be able to:

Explain the principles of low-code/no-code software development and computational thinking.

Identify and apply a blocks-based approach to solve domain-specific problems.

Design and construct workflows that model real processes and data flows.

Organize and structure the topic area of their system using a taxonomy (or “classification”) of components and types.

Integrate blocks, workflows, and taxonomy into a cohesive structure.
