Activity 4: conceptual metaphor and conceptual integration
Read the following phrases and consider what domains or mental spaces are involved in the process of conceptual mapping or projection:
She could feel the anger building up inside her.
The surgeon is a butcher.
The commuters arrived in swarms.
It’s raining cats and dogs
George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
Alcoholism sniggered at me.
‘Now the dream that used to turn in your sleep,
sails into the year’s coldest night.’ (‘Tomorrow’ – Mark Strand (2014 [1970]))
In each case, do you think conceptual metaphor or conceptual integration is the most useful in explaining your interpretations?
