Demonstratives.

a. This, that, these, those are called demonstratives. They are adjectives when they accompany a noun:

e.g.  These shoes are nice.         Adjective (these) + noun (shoes)

They are pronouns when they replace a noun:

e.g.  These shoes are nice. Those are horrible. (those = those shoes)

They are equivalent to the Italian questo, questa, quello/a, quelli/e. Look at the scheme:
