GRAMMAR: Superlatives
Let’s revise: Superlatives.
a. We can use superlatives when we compare three or more things, look at the example:
E.g. BOXES A B C
Box C is larger than box A and box B. = Box C is the largest.
Large = base adjective Largest = superlative form
► To make the superlative form of short adjectives (1 syllable) we write:
the + base adjective + – est
E.g. great > the greatest new > the newest cold > the coldest tall > the tallest
► To make the superlative form of long adjectives (2 or more syllables) we write:
the most + base adjective.
E.g. interesting > the most interesting beautiful > the most beautiful
intelligent > the most intelligent
► 2-syllable adjectives that end in – y form the comparative like this:
happy > the happ
y –iest
E.g. funny > the funniest sunny > the sunniest
► Some adjectives have irregular comparatives:
Good > the best
Bad > the worst
Far > the farthest / furthest
► Remember: we don’t use “than” with superlatives but we use the or a possessive adjective (my, your, etc.) before the adjective.
E.g. Mount Everest is the tallest in the world.
Susan is my oldest friend.
