1.1.    Comparatives.

a. We use comparatives when we compare two or more things, for example box A and box 

Box A is large, but box B is larger than box A.

 

Large = base adjective                  Larger = comparative form

 

► To make the comparative form of short adjectives (1 syllable) we write:  base adjective + – er

 

E.g.  great > greater       new > newer    old > older          cold > colder      tall > taller                         

               

 

► To make the comparative form of long adjectives (2 or more syllables) we write: more  + base adjective.

 

E.g.  interesting > more interesting      beautiful > more  beautiful      intelligent > more  intelligent        

► 2-syllable adjectives that end in – y form the comparative like this:     Happy > happ y   – ier

E.g.  funny > funnier     sunny > sunnier

► Some adjectives have irregular comparatives:

Good > better

Bad > worse

Far > farther / further

 

► Finally, to compare two people or things we need than.

 

E.g.        Mike is taller than me.

                The new software is more efficient than the old one.
